Description
“”Tartuffe,”” a comedy by Molière, is a satirical play set in 17th-century France that criticizes religious hypocrisy. The story centers around Orgon, a wealthy man who has taken in Tartuffe, a seemingly pious and devout man. Orgon is completely taken in by Tartuffe’s pretense of religious fervor, to the point of offering him his daughter Mariane’s hand in marriage and making him the heir to his fortune. Orgon’s family, however, sees through Tartuffe’s deceit. His wife, Elmire, devises a plan to expose Tartuffe’s true nature. She arranges a private meeting with Tartuffe, during which Orgon hides and witnesses Tartuffe’s advances towards Elmire. Realizing his folly, Orgon confronts Tartuffe, but Tartuffe has already secured legal rights to Orgon’s property. In a twist of fate, the king intervenes, recognizing Tartuffe as a notorious imposter and criminal. Tartuffe is arrested, and Orgon’s family is saved. The play ends with a message about the dangers of hypocrisy and the importance of true piety and virtue. —- ISBN: 9798333998330
