Description
“”Oedipus at Colonus”” by Sophocles is the second play of the Theban trilogy, although it was written last, and serves as a poignant continuation of the tragic story of Oedipus after his downfall in “”Oedipus the King.”” The play is set years after Oedipus has blinded himself and been exiled from Thebes, finding himself near Athens, in the village of Colonus. Accompanied by his faithful daughter Antigone, Oedipus arrives as a broken and aged man, seeking a place to die and find peace. They discover that they are on sacred ground, dedicated to the Furies, which is prophesied to be the final resting place of Oedipus. However, his presence is initially resisted by the locals, including the ruler of Athens, Theseus. After learning of Oedipus’s identity and his tragic story, Theseus offers him protection, recognizing the divine will at play in his fate. The drama intensifies with the arrival of Oedipus’s son, Polynices, who seeks his father’s support to regain the throne of Thebes from his brother, Eteocles. Oedipus, still embittered by the betrayal of his sons, curses them both rather than providing any support. This curse foretells that they will die by each other’s hands in the struggle for Thebes. Meanwhile, Creon, now the regent of Thebes, also arrives, attempting to take Oedipus back to Thebes for his burial, believing that the place of his death will bring blessing or curse upon the land. Oedipus refuses to support Thebes, the city that exiled him, and places his faith in Theseus and Athens instead. “”Oedipus at Colonus”” concludes with Oedipus being led away by a mysterious death, not in agony and disgrace but in something closer to mysterious transfiguration. His death is marked by supernatural signs, and he is buried in a secret location that promises protection and favor to the land of Athens. The play explores themes of power, redemption, and the impact of destiny, offering a somber reflection on suffering and the sovereignty of the gods in the affairs of men. Sophocles provides a dignified end to the tortured life of Oedipus, highlighting themes of reconciliation, loyalty, and the pursuit of peace even in the face of relentless tragedy. —- ISBN: 9798334056978
