Sorry, No Spark

Smiling, that contented grin on my face, I ventured out the pub into the warm late spring evening. Elated, the mental analysis began…”it went well?”, we laughed, she touched her hair a lot, she liked my gift, couple of drinks, kiss on the cheek at the end….perfect right? As I wandered across the vast people covered green, making the short journey towards my parked car, I started texting….”Hey Hannah, lovely to meet you just now, I thought you were….” A paragraph or two later I finished with “perhaps we can get together again later this week”. My first ever online date had just concluded. Still buzzing I called Dale, a close friend and over time, long suffering personal dating confidante. As I relayed a full account of the date I could sense the bewilderment in his voice, punctuated with laughter of disbelief. “You did what Daniel?”….”Well I thought giving her a bottle of Gin would be a nice thing to do!…..she likes Gin”. The laughter was getting louder. There was a laughter crescendo at various points in that conversation, as there often is in our conversations, however, that day it was all at my expense. Shortly after the conversation finished I received a WhatsApp notification …….Hannah!…..Excited, I eagerly opened the message. “Hey Daniel, you are a great guy. I had a lovely time but I’m really sorry, I didn’t feel a spark between us”. Deflated, I put the phone in my pocket. Self-analysis began, “what’s wrong with me?”, “what did I do wrong”. My online dating journey had truly begun. With hindsight, I cringe and laugh when I recount aspects of that first date. Subsequently, I have made many more mistakes with various women since. However, like all good recollections there have been lots of high points whilst dating too. As time passed, experience and understanding gained, more highs than lows. When I first ventured into online dating, I naively thought building connections would follow a set pattern. Dating middle aged women isn’t that easy.
