Purporting to be the memoirs of an English aristocrat and Captain by the name of George Herbert, the work relates the story of how he was by happenstance invited into the harem of a Moorish Pasha by its lady inhabitants. There he enjoys the cosmopolitan company of these nine women hailing from all across the Mediterranean world. Each of the ladies is given her chance to tell of her past amorous adventures, as is our gallant hero himself. Alongside the expected midnight rendezvous with secret lovers, there includes amongst their escapades encounters with Italian bandits and Turkish slavers, a coup d’etat in a Sultan’s palace, and a crisis of fecundity at a small German Court.
