The novel is a bildungsroman, or a coming-of-age story, that follows the life of an orphan named Pip and his growth and development through a series of personal challenges and adventures. Plot Summary Part I: Childhood and Early Life Pip’s Early Life : Philip Pirrip, nicknamed Pip, is raised by his sister, Mrs. Joe Gargery, and her kind-hearted blacksmith husband, Joe Gargery, in the marshes of Kent, England. The Convict : On Christmas Eve, young Pip encounters an escaped convict named Magwitch, who intimidates Pip into stealing food and a file to aid in his escape. Miss Havisham and Estella : Pip is later invited to the home of the wealthy but eccentric Miss Havisham, who has been living in a state of perpetual mourning since being jilted at the altar. At Miss Havisham’s home, Pip meets and falls in love with her beautiful but cold-hearted ward, Estella. Part II: Young Adulthood Great Expectations : Pip learns from the lawyer Mr. Jaggers that he has been provided with a large fortune by an anonymous benefactor. Believing the benefactor to be Miss Havisham, Pip assumes that she intends for him to marry Estella. Life in London : Pip moves to London to become a gentleman. He befriends Herbert Pocket and receives education and guidance from Mr. Matthew Pocket. Alienation from Joe : As Pip adopts a more refined lifestyle, he becomes ashamed of his humble beginnings and distances himself from Joe and his former life. Part III: Revelation and Redemption The True Benefactor : Pip is shocked to discover that his benefactor is not Miss Havisham but the convict Magwitch, who has made a fortune in Australia and returned to England to see Pip. Helping Magwitch : Despite his initial horror, Pip decides to help Magwitch escape from the authorities. During this time, Pip also learns more about Magwitch’s past and his connection to other characters in the story. Miss Havisham’s Regret : Miss Havisham, who had manipulated Estella to break men’s hearts as revenge for her own heartbreak, expresses regret for the pain she caused Pip.
