Maybe you think like I do, poetry should rhyme. Breaking your grocery shopping list into stanzas doesn’t make it poetry. It should genuinely rhyme – truck and love don’t rhyme. Rhymes have to contribute to the flow of the idea not just be thrown in because they rhyme. A poem has a consistent rhythm. Accents of words can’t be changed unnaturally to make them fit. Poems are a journey from point A to point B, but it’s the scenic route. Every turn on the way will still lead to B but offers an added panorama.
