One hundred years ago, in 1924, my grandparents Batia and Haskel Samelowitz made the courageous decision to leave their village in Palestine and bring their young family to Australia; nearly 40 years after they had escaped persecution in Poland and Russia and settled in Ottoman-ruled Palestine. This is the story of them, their children and generations of their family: their experiences in a small agricultural settlement in Palestine; in a small country town in Western Australia; and in Perth and Melbourne during the Depression, World War II and after.
