The Accuser: A book of Reedsy-inspire short stories by John Jenkins

A few years ago, I was searching the internet for paid writing competitions. I was specifically looking for short story writing challenges that would stretch my abilities and increase my reach. I had already started participating in the Nicholl Fellowships a few years prior and wanted to branch out even further. To my great delight, I found a website called Reedsy, based in the UK, that had a list of the best short story writing competitions around at that time a few years ago. I picked the three competitions that looked the most appealing. The most frequently posted competition of the lot was Reedy’s own short story competition. I was ready to roll. In the case of the Reedsy short story competition, the website even provided the prompts for writing, plus a pseudo text editor. I couldn’t wait to get out into the world and see what I was made of. From what I remember, I had a slow start. I believe my first story still has less than two likes. I had many good moments on the site, but I’ve never won any of their competitions. Earlier this year, I stopped participating in all writing competitions. The reason was that I currently have a backlog of around 15 unpublished books that I wish to self-publish in the near future. I have so much material that I could survive the rest of my life on these books alone. So, while I could just belt out work after work, like Tupac Shakur and die with all of my best work unpublished, I have decided that I wish to see this through and put my works out in the public eye. Writing books for their own sake is fun, but books are for the audience, not the writer. This book contains the first 24 stories contained in my Reedsy account as of 2024. There have bee no omissions. At least I hope I included everything. Most of them are 11 hundred words, while a couple are 16 hundred. Maybe I’ll write some more Reedsy stories this year.
